One of my first selections, and likely the music that inspired this whole series, was Fela Kuti, who I mentioned helped get me through the more stressful times in Grad School.

But I must give credit to another artist who was equally instrumental in surviving that time: Billy Bragg. The album from him and Wilco, Mermaid Avenue, was frequently played by my friend and artist Jon Francis in our Knox College studios and our College radio show on WVKC.

Every time this one comes on, I’m reminded of how I can survive the most stressful and uncertain of times, especially helpful as I venture into the undiscovered country that is a career in art. And as I look forward It’s also comforting to look back to those days of making art wiht friends and forcing our musical tastes on the residents of Galesburg, IL.

Enjoy:
